* * * 12th Annual C/1/8 Branson Reunion * * *

Nov 5-11, 2017

Hello everyone,

It's time to start planning for our 12th annual C/1/8 reunion in Branson during their Veterans Week Homecoming Celebration, Sun, Nov 5 - Sat, Nov 11, 2017. Last year we had about 32 attendees and hopefully this year we’ll have many more. As soon as you can, please let me know if you are planning on coming along with your dates of arrival and departure and where you will be staying. As soon as I have compiled a list, I’ll send it out so that everyone can see who is attending this year. Someone might see your name on the list and that will encourage them to come. As we have said many times before, if you are tentative about coming to our reunion, take that first step. I can almost certainly promise that you won’t regret it. It’s hard to put into words what a rewarding experience it is to share stories that can cause tears, but can also heal hidden wounds and fears. The camaraderie and bond amongst us is
quite heartwarming. Please come and enjoy this experience with us.

You will find below a list of dates for some of the activities we have participated in the past. Some activities, such as C/1/8 group dinners, have not been planned as yet and will be added as arrangements are made so please check back. Just to let you know, Shindig’s where we enjoyed the karaoke the past two years is not open this year (will explain later) so we are looking into some other places.

These activities need some special attention so please take note:

The Annual Vietnam Veterans Mini Reunion is to be held on Mon, Nov 6 at the Clay Cooper Theater. Some of us have already bought our $15 tickets to attend the Hot Rods & High Heels show at the Clay Cooper Theater at 10:00am. This entitles us to a reserved seat with our group for the 10:00am show and a box lunch provided for us after the morning show. This also entitles us to this same reserved seat for the afternoon activities. We purchased 40 advance tickets and 30 have been sold, leaving 10 tickets left for the 10:00am show and lunch. If you would like to purchase advanced tickets and sit with our group, please let me know ASAP. If you do not want to attend the 10:00am show, you can come to the theater at 12 noon and see if there are any free seats still available for the afternoon activities but I just want to warn you that last year’s show was sold out.

Here is a list of those of you who have already bought their tickets (I have 4 tickets left to sell @ $15 ea):

Reservations are required and I can make a reservation for everyone as soon as I know who will be in Branson on Fri, Nov 10. If you would like to attend, please let me know and I’ll make a reservation for our group.

Also, two years ago some of us attended the Annual Military Gala and Banquet at the Chateau on the Lake and we sat at the 4th Infantry tables. This is a more formal evening with local entertainment, dinner, dancing, fireworks and a military salute. The cost is $55/person. So far, the Wernets, Waughs and Sue and I will be attending. If you would be interested in joining us, please contact me at 314-757-6035 or andyday3548@yahoo.com. Payment is due early in October.

Well, that’s all for now. Be sure and contact some of the fellows that have not previously attended and encourage them to come. Also, remember to let me know if you will be coming so I can get a list out with the next email.

100th Anniversary of 4th Infantry Division Celebration

Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, CO

August, 2017

This past August 2017, seven of our C-1-8 brothers along with their spouses attended the 2017 National 4th Infantry Division Reunion at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs where they helped celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the 4th Infantry. A great time was had by all. Some of their activities included visits to Fort Carson where our C-1-8 brothers proudly marched in the Pass & Review and everyone especially enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie experienced with all the 4th Infantry brothers and their spouses in the hospitality room as well as hitting the dance floor at the R&R Dinner Dance. If you missed this reunion at Fort Carson, they have another one planned for 2020. I highly recommend you making plans to attend.

Here are some photos from this event:

* * * 8th Annual C/1/8 Branson Reunion * * *

Nov 5-11, 2013

Hello everyone,

Our 2013 Branson C-1-8 reunion was once again a huge success with a total of 41 vets and their families attending, 20 of those being Charlie Company brothers from all over our country (15 various states).  We had a few newcomers again this year, that being Jeff and Pam Jones from Lakeland , FL and Craig and Margaret Hardwick from San Antonio , TX . Other Charlie Co. brothers attending were:  Horace & Barb Beasley, Pat & Lois Carnes, Buddy & Kathy Compton, Hano & Norma Cornwell, Eric & Jeanne Czernowski, Rick Dalton, Andy & Sue Day, Teddy & Violet Fisher, Bill Flemming, Bud & Susan Langan, Butch & Brenda Mauldin, Don Newton, Ken & Lois Oostenink, Bob & Brinda Robbins, Charlie & Nancy Rutherford, Van & Lynn Waugh, Frank & Theresa Wernet, Dennis Wolf and many other family members.

The College of the Ozarks hosted a Vietnam Veteran Thank You Reception this year where each veteran in attendance was able to select a special handmade Quilt of Valor in honor of their service in Vietnam .  This was quite an unexpected and heartfelt surprise.  Many of us got together for a few dinners as well as the annual Vietnam Veterans mini-reunion, the annual 4th Infantry Division hospitality room get-together and many evenings sitting around the campfire together.  The highlights of the week, our annual C-1-8 picnic and the annual Veterans Day parade were once again enjoyed by all with the weather cooperating beautifully.

We hope to see everyone back next year along with many more of you.

2013 National 4th Infantry Division Reunion

July, 2013

Ft. Benning, GA

4ID 'Walk of Honor' Monument dedicated July 18, 2013

Some of our C/1/8 fellows and their wives braved the heat and humidity and were in attendance for this monumental event – Frank & Theresa Wernet, Eric & Jeanne Czernowski and Buddy & Kathy Compton.

On the 95th anniversary of the 4th Infantry Division’s first battle, Soldiers, veterans, family members and special guests of the division came together at Fort Benning ’s Walk of Honor near the National Infantry Museum to dedicate the unit’s official monument.

Among the special guests was Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Raymond Odierno, a former commander of the 4th Infantry Division.

“I have never been more proud to have this patch on my right shoulder as I am today,” Odierno said. “I think about all those who have given their lives and sacrificed so much for their country and their unit.”

The monument honors the division’s past and current campaigns, while also leaving space for future campaigns.  Odierno said this aspect of the monument’s design was representative of what it means to be a U.S. Soldier.

“Being a Soldier in the Army is about understanding the past, being prepared in the present and then preparing yourself for the future,” he said. “What today really is about is remembering the past and those who have sacrificed so we can have this great country today. Whenever we do a memorial service like this, it’s really important to remember how many men and women have raised their right hand and said, ‘I’m willing to sacrifice my life for what we have here in the United States .’ That’s what this memorial is about. The 4th Infantry Division has been an integral part of that for more than the last 90 years.”

The monument is nine feet tall, cast in bronze and features the 4th Infantry Division patch design of four ivy leaves joined at the stem and positioned at the points of a square.

In his speech, Odierno remembered the sacrifices of all who have served in the division during the past 95 years.

“Our Army and our Soldiers are the best in the world because they stand on the shoulders of our veterans who have come before them,” he said. “This monument represents nearly 100 years of service by the Soldiers and veterans of this great division. This monument recognizes all those who volunteered and sacrificed their lives to make our country just a little bit better. This monument celebrates the camaraderie we have shared by wearing the ivy patch of this great unit.”

* * * 7th Annual C/1/8 Branson Reunion * * *

Nov 5-11, 2012

Hello fellow brothers,

Our 7th Annual C/1/8 Reunion in Branson was a huge success again this year.  Twenty-six attended this year with many of the usuals, including Bob and Brinda Robbins, Ken and Lois Oostenink, Butch and Brenda Mauldin, Teddy and Violet Fisher, Darrell Calvert, Eric Czernowski, Pat and Lois Carnes, Bob and Susan Langan, Van and Lynn Waugh, Buddy and Kathy Compton, Sue and myself and Hano and Norma Cornwell made their third trip over from Hawaii to be with us again this year. Frank and Theresa Wernet joined us for the first time this year and Charles and Nancy Rutherford made a surprise appearance at our annual BBQ picnic. We had a beautiful afternoon again for our picnic and everyone enjoyed the Langan's "burgoo" and the ladies especially enjoyed Pat Carnes' homemade blackberry and peach wines.  Besides the usual Vietnam Veterans Mini Reunion and the 4th Infantry hospitality room, some of us also enjoyed listening and dancing to some big band music played by the 14 piece Jerry Ford Orchestra. We actually had a private performance during an afternoon show and we all hope this becomes an annual event. The parade was a great experience again this year and it was our first experience with rain in the forecast.  We luckily just made it back as it started to rain.  I believe I can speak for all and say that everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves at this year's C/1/8 reunion and hope to return next year.

Here's a few photos with more to come soon in the photo album section.
